Jess Friend arrives at Essendon Royals

Essendon Royals Senior Women’s coach Vince Battiato has further strengthened his senior women’s squad with the addition of Jess Friend.

Friend, who arrives at the Royals from Brunswick City, had previously spent a number of years at Moreland Zebras and arrives at Cross Keys Reserve for Season 2022 adding plenty of experience to the side’s backline.

Having been with the Royals for a number of sessions now, Friend said she was impressed with the squad that has been assembled by Battiato and the Royals.

“I’m really looking forward to playing with Vince and the exciting squad of players here,” he said. 

“He’s creating such a positive culture there which is something that’s a huge drawcard for me and us as a playing group.”

Beyond the senior set-up, Friend said it was pleasing to be at a club that placed such an emphasis on its female football program. 

“The club has such a focus on their Women’s team and their grassroots girls teams too and it’s wonderful to see a club putting such emphasis on supporting women in sport and showing pathways for young women,” she said.

“I can’t wait to show the league what our 2022 side has in store.”
