Essendon Royals Women’s Coach Vince Battiato is looking forward to another tough test against North Geelong Warriors at Cross Keys Reserve this evening.
The Royals sit in second place courtesy of goal difference following the 5-5 thriller that was played out between third-placed Spring Hills Stallions and first-placed Brunswick Juventus on Friday evening.
The result means the Royals can move back into title contention but could also see their promotion at significant risk if they fail to win today.
The Royals were triumphant against North Geelong last time out, winning 3-1 away from home in what Battiato remembers as one of the tougher tests of the competition.
“I thought we were very good that day against a very decent side who deserve their spot in the top half of the table,” Battiato said.
“I thought we missed a few chances that day early but got a solid 3-1 win. I’ll be looking for a really solid effort and win against the Warriors on Sunday after the great 5-0 win last week against Clifton Hill.”
Battiato said whilst it was pleasing to still have his side’s promotion fate under their control, he knew the stakes were high with it being so tight at the top of the table.
“It’s fantastic to know that what we have earned so far is the right to have promotion on our own boot with five matches to go, so the key is just to focus on continuing to win,” he said.
“We still have some tough matches to play, so the focus now is just get three points each week, and the job is done, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have one eye on other matches.
“As a coaching staff, those other key results can impact our preparation going forward, but it doesn’t change the objective each week, and that’s three points.”
The Royals are back at home this evening after three tough weeks on the road.
“We are all really looking forward to being back at Cross Keys. The atmosphere and support is just a pleasure to play in front of,” Battiato said.
“We’ll be keen to continue our home form with another win.”
