Women’s Match Report: Royals stay strong in 3-0 triumph over Casey

On a chilly night at Cross Keys Reserve, the Essendon Royals turned up the heat against the Casey Comets, securing a decisive 3-0 victory. Despite a challenging opposition and a hard-fought battle, the Royals demonstrated their prowess with three outstanding strikes that will be talked about for some time.

The early exchanges of the match were evenly contested, with both sides trying to assert dominance. The Royals had a good chance in the 22nd minute when Rachel Alonso and Marie Rampal combined well, but Filomena Delic’s header from Rampal’s cross went over the bar. The Comets, too, had a half-chance in the 39th minute, but their shot was off target.

The breakthrough came in the 34th minute from Ayano Koizumi. Her first shot was blocked, but she didn’t give up, recovering the ball before curling a sweeping shot from just inside the box into the back of the net. Koizumi’s poise under pressure and precision with the finish had the home fans on their feet.

The Royals carried that 1-0 lead into halftime, but the game was far from over. The second half saw the Royals pick up where they left off, with Rampal shooting wide in the 52nd minute and Mary Hubeek forcing a good save from the Casey keeper in the 53rd.

The match was finally put to bed in the final 10 minutes, thanks to Koizumi and Alonso. Koizumi found the net for the second time in the 82nd minute, punishing the slightest lapse in Casey’s defence with a wicked left-foot strike. Alonso followed suit, blasting an outrageous shot from more than 30 yards out to beat Brooke Bennett, who had put in an incredible shift for Casey.

Despite the 3-0 scoreline, this was not an easy win for the Royals. They had to work hard to break down a solid Casey defence, and it took some truly remarkable strikes to beat a well-performing Bennett in the Comets’ goal.

The result secures the Royals’ spot at the top of the table as they head into a crucial match against Geelong Galaxy next week. The team will take confidence from this performance and will be looking to keep the momentum going as they continue their season.

This victory exemplifies the Royals’ fighting spirit and their ability to turn challenging situations into opportunities. Their perseverance against a tough Casey side serves as a testament to their position at the top of the VPLW table. The season is far from over, but the Royals will be hoping to keep producing performances like this in their pursuit of the title.

The Royals Reserves were also dominant on the night, picking up a 8-0 win over Casey. The Reserves sit 3rd on the table, having played 10 games, boasting a goal difference of 41.
