In a pulsating encounter at the Home of the Matildas, Essendon Royals emerged victorious in the Nike FC Community Cup Final, overcoming Casey Comets in a nail-biting penalty shootout after a goalless draw in regular time.
From the outset, the Royals showcased their intent, with the starting lineup exuding confidence and determination.
The Royals began the game on the front foot. In the 17th minute, Rebecca Davies rattled the woodwork with a sublime strike from just outside the box. This came shortly after Rachel Alonso had tested the Casey defence with a promising opportunity. The Royals’ offensive onslaught continued, with the post denying them once again in the 24th minute, this time from a powerful shot by Natasha Inia. Alonso, always a threat, came close in the 25th minute, delicately lobbing the ball just over the bar after being played through.
Despite the Royals’ dominance and a series of near misses, the first half ended goalless. The second half saw the Royals continue their siege on the Casey goal. A remarkable sequence in the 62nd minute saw the post, a save, and a clearance off the line deny the Royals in quick succession. The Casey defence, led by the outstanding Brooke Bennett in goal, somehow kept the relentless Royals at bay.
As the clock ticked on, both teams had their moments. Koizumi’s close-range header was saved following a corner scramble, and Alonso’s free-kick tested the keeper once more. With the game seemingly destined for penalties, Davies unleashed a long-range effort in injury time, only for Bennett to pull off another stunning save.
With no extra time in this competition, the match went straight to penalties. The tension was palpable.
The first round saw Royals’ goalkeeper Beth Mason-Jones produce a fantastic save, diving to her right to deny Casey. Davies, ever the reliable, stepped up and confidently dispatched her penalty. The subsequent rounds saw both teams converting their spot-kicks, with Alonso and Ayano Koizumi both finding the net for the Royals. The pressure was immense when 15-year-old Olivia Ristevski took her turn, but she displayed remarkable composure, placing her shot into the top corner.
The decisive moment came in the fifth round. Casey’s miss handed the Royals a golden opportunity, and they seized it, clinching the Nike FC Community Cup in dramatic fashion.
Special mentions must go to 16-year-old Eliza Vargiu, who put in a tireless shift at full-back, nullifying Casey’s threats and supporting the Royals’ forward moves. The sheer number of times the Royals hit the post, coupled with Bennett’s goalkeeping masterclass for Casey, made it a wonder that the game even reached penalties.
The victory marks a significant achievement for the Essendon Royals, showcasing their resilience, skill, and team spirit. As the celebrations begin, the Royals can look back on a hard-fought win and a memorable day in the club’s history, whilst remaining focused on the remaining league games.
With silverware already attained, however, this already ranks as an historic campaign for our Senior Women.
