Ayano Koizumi Crowned 2023 VPLW Best-and-Fairest in Stellar Season

In a season that saw the Essendon Royals Senior Women’s team clinch the VPLW Championship, VPLW Grand Final, and the Nike FC Community Cup Final, star player Ayano Koizumi has added another feather to the team’s cap by being named the 2023 VPLW Best-and-Fairest.

With a remarkable tally of 34 votes, Ayano has been recognised for her pivotal role in the team’s triumphant journey through the season, contributing a staggering 15 goals in 18 league games and consistently delivering crucial assists throughout the season.

Upon receiving the award, Ayano expressed her joy and gratitude, stating, “I couldn’t believe when I heard about the award, and I was really happy. I just enjoyed playing soccer with my teammates. We were able to win four titles as a team with great teammates, our coaches, and Essendon Royals families. I really want to say thank you to everyone!”

Ayano’s prowess on the field, her ability to seamlessly blend strength and intelligence in her gameplay, and her fearless approach have not only made her a standout player but also a vital asset to the Royals.

Senior Women’s Coach, Vince Battiato shared his thoughts on what makes Ayano a deserving recipient of the award: “She’s just a quality player really. To be a standout player in a team that dominated so much speaks volumes not just to her ability but to the consistency within which she got the job done – every match, every training session.”

Vince further highlighted Ayano’s adaptability and professional demeanour, noting, “She’s just not afraid to play. She has a strength that is so paramount in the Australian game but has an outstanding football IQ and the class to go with it. She’s strong on the ball, she’s brilliant without it, and she’s not afraid to shoot.”

Reflecting on the experience of coaching Ayano, Vince added, “She is living proof that football is a universal language. Without speaking English, she never put a foot wrong. And she is the consummate professional in every way. Just a stellar human being, not just an amazing footballer. I couldn’t think of a better recipient of the award.”

Ayano’s accolade is not only a testament to her exceptional skill and dedication but also a reflection of the collective spirit, talent, and determination that has propelled the Essendon Royals to a season of remarkable achievements.
