Cross Keys Reserve witnessed a spirited tussle on Friday night, as Essendon Royals maintained their unbeaten VPL2 record with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against a formidable North Sunshine Eagles side.
The Royals, eager to capitalise on their home ground advantage, launched into the fray with intensity. However, North Sunshine Eagles showed early intent, with an unsettling free kick that required a commanding intervention from Royals’ goalkeeper, Andre Russo.
Despite a subdued start in goalmouth action, the Royals’ zeal soon bore fruit. The breakthrough came when Noah Ryan reclaimed possession high up the park, threading the ball to Graham Kelly whose deft flick set up Jordan Adeyemi for a composed finish, marking yet another goal in his impressive tally for the season.
The Royals’ set pieces posed a constant threat, with Brad Norton forcing a tip-over from a dangerous free kick and Kelly testing the Eagles’ keeper with a robust attempt. As the first half wore on, the Royals survived a scare when a deep cross from the Eagles crashed against the bar, only for the Eagles to later miss a close-range attempt that hit the side netting.
Heading into the break with a slender lead, the Royals faced early second-half adversity, as Ethan Georgopoulos took a nasty blow, resulting in a contentious yellow card decision. The game’s temperature rose when the returning Dean Clarke, shortly after being substituted on, saw red for a challenge deemed excessive by the referee. The Eagles capitalized on the man advantage, equalizing through a well-worked move finished by Nduje Mujeci.
Despite the setback, the Royals displayed commendable resilience. Georgopoulos, embodying the team’s determination, was denied by a last-ditch defensive effort, with Norton’s subsequent header just skimming over from the corner.
The match crescendoed with the Eagles ramping up the pressure, their efforts met by a stalwart Royals defence. As the clock wound down, Julian Guzzardi’s relentless work down the wing almost restored the Royals’ lead, but the ball was an inch too high for Adeyemi’s header which just couldn’t find the back of the net.
Kelly had a late chance to snatch victory with a long-range effort, but it veered just wide of the mark.
In the end, a hard-earned point in tough conditions for the Royals, who remain undefeated and now sit in fourth place with 12 points from their opening six games.
In the earlier kick-off the Under-23s secured a 2-1 win.
The Royals are home again next Friday night, taking on Nunawading City FC.
