In a thrilling NPLW Victoria showdown at BT Connor Reserve, Essendon Royals secured a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Preston Lions, setting the stage for an intense finals series.
The match was marked by dramatic shifts in momentum and showcased the high stakes both teams faced as they vied to not only put themselves in pole position for a home final but keep their Premiership hopes alive.
However, the draw, coupled by league leaders FC Bulleen Lions defeating Alamein 4-1 on Saturday, means both sides’ Premiership hopes are over, but both Preston and Essendon are still in contention to secure a home final in the round of the season.
The Royals, coming off a crucial 3-1 victory over Bentleigh Greens, started the match with high intensity. They took an early lead in the 5th minute when TJ Vlajnic’s corner was inadvertently flicked into the back of the net by a Preston defender, giving the Royals an unexpected advantage.
However, Preston responded quickly and effectively. Just three minutes later, in the 8th minute, they capitalised on the wet conditions. Georgia Henderson managed to get her head to a well-delivered ball, directing it into the ground and past Beth Mason-Jones, whose efforts were hindered by the slippery surface.
The remainder of the first half saw Preston creating several scoring opportunities, but Mason-Jones was formidable in goal, showcasing her reflexes and command of the area to keep the score level at halftime.
The second half continued with the same competitive spirit. In the 61st minute, Reona Omiya set up Ava Groba with a beautifully timed pass. Groba, demonstrating her speed and finishing ability, broke through the Preston defence to score a brilliant goal, momentarily putting the Royals ahead 2-1.
However, the lead was short-lived. Preston equalised almost immediately in the 62nd minute. A well-worked move down their right flank culminated in a cross that found Haley Johnson, whose header ricocheted off the post and into the net, drawing the sides level once again.
The match’s final stages were tense, with both teams pushing for a winning goal. The Royals maintained their composure and defensive organisation, thwarting Preston’s attempts to seize a late victory. At the same time, the Royals looked dangerous on the break, though they could not convert their chances into a decisive third goal.
The draw means Preston remain goal-difference clear of Essendon on the ladder, with Heidelberg sitting three points behind the two sides after they dropped points away to Bentleigh.
Essendon can wrap up a home final if they defeat Alamein on the final day and if Preston either lose or draw against Heidelberg at Olympic Village.
