Essendon Royals overcame a hostile away trip, tough conditions, and refereeing drama to secure a gutsy 2-1 victory over Springvale White Eagles at the Serbian Sports Centre on Friday night.
A bobbly pitch and a confident Springvale outfit set the stage for a physical and fiercely contested match, with the first half proving to be a tight battle in midfield where neither side was able to generate clear-cut chances.
The game saw some controversy when the Royals were awarded a penalty, only for the referee to overturn his own decision after an extraordinary sequence of consultations. Despite being closest to the incident, he first consulted his nearest linesman, then ran to the fourth official and far-side linesman before changing his decision.
Adding to the frustration, Springvale was soon awarded a penalty of their own, which they converted to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Royals emerged from the break determined to respond, but they had to do so without Phil Riccobene, who was forced off with an injury, making way for Vincent Nicoletti. His introduction proved pivotal, as he rose highest to head home from a corner within minutes of the restart, levelling the score at 1-1.
The drama continued when the referee pointed to the spot again, awarding Springvale their second penalty of the night. This time, Andre Russo produced a stunning save, keeping the Royals level and giving his side a massive boost.
With the game heading into its final stages, it was Seb Lo Monaco who stepped up as the match-winner, driving through on goal and coolly slotting home to give Essendon the lead.
The joy was short-lived for Lo Monaco, who was forced off with an injury.
A gritty and hard-fought win sees the Royals maintain their momentum in VPL2, proving once again their resilience and ability to grind out results in difficult circumstances.
