Men’s Match Report: Royals Stumble at Werribee as Season Take Another Hit

Football can be a cruel game, especially when confidence is fragile. Essendon Royals endured another tough evening at Costas Mitre 10 Park on Friday night, suffering a frustrating 3-1 loss to Werribee City in a contest that saw fortunes swing wildly before ending in disappointment.

Even before kickoff, Essendon’s evening took an unwanted turn, with captain and influential midfielder Graham Kelly forced to withdraw after the warm-up due to injury. It was an omen of things to come.

The home side started brightly, and it was Werribee’s John Mabok who opened the scoring after 18 minutes, finishing confidently to put Royals on the back foot early.

Essendon battled back, levelling just five minutes into the second half through Takumi Niwa, who continues to impress with crucial contributions. But the Royals’ resurgence was short-lived.

Werribee reclaimed the lead almost immediately through Thomas Biss in the 52nd minute, and things went from bad to worse moments later, when stand-in skipper Vince Lia was shown a second yellow card in quick succession, reducing Essendon to ten men and severely denting hopes of a comeback.

The numerical disadvantage proved decisive, and Dau Akol’s goal in the 73rd minute wrapped things up for the hosts, leaving the Royals to reflect on another disappointing evening.

The result sees Essendon slip to sixth, overtaken by next week’s opponents, Goulburn Valley Suns, who now sit a point above the Royals.

With time running out in the playoff race, the Royals must find a quick response if their promotion aspirations are to remain alive. Next week’s showdown with the Suns now shapes as a season-defining moment.
