Essendon Royals delivered a statement-making performance at Cross Keys Reserve on Saturday, routing finals rivals Boroondara-Carey Eagles 5-0 in the club’s biggest-ever win in NPLW Victoria’s top flight.
This was a victory defined by quality, determination, and sheer attacking brilliance, showcasing just how far Vince Battiato’s side have come in their remarkable second-half surge towards finals football.
The Royals dominated from the outset, creating a series of early opportunities. Olivia Wood, Fujiwara Airi, and Emma Langley all tested the Boroondara keeper, but it wasn’t until the 17th minute that their persistence paid off. Following a scramble from a free kick, defender Rebekah Van Dort was quickest to react, tapping home from close range to open the scoring.
Essendon doubled their advantage after half an hour in somewhat fortuitous circumstances, as Langley’s attempted cross looped over substitute goalkeeper Emma Olsen and nestled into the far corner. With momentum firmly on their side, the Royals found a third shortly before halftime. Fujiwara produced a sublime piece of skill, taking a precise first touch before swivelling to volley into the top corner for an early contender for goal of the season.
Moments later, Deven Jackson added a fourth with an even more audacious strike. Capitalising on a poor Boroondara clearance, Jackson unleashed a perfectly struck half-volley from 25 yards that soared spectacularly into the net, leaving Olsen stranded.
Essendon refused to let up after halftime, adding a fifth just six minutes into the second half. Jackson’s shot was well saved, but Wood followed up sharply, calmly converting the rebound to complete the rout.
Boroondara had their moments, but Royals goalkeeper Zara Board and her backline held firm, securing a well-deserved clean sheet to cap off an outstanding team display.
This emphatic victory sees the Royals leapfrog Alamein into third place, opening a crucial three-point gap above the chasing pack as finals football beckons. With confidence soaring and the attack firing on all cylinders, Essendon Royals are well and truly hitting their stride at the perfect time.
