Essendon Royals return to Cross Keys Reserve this Saturday refreshed from their cup final bye and ready to resume their push for a finals berth, with FV Academy the visitors in a fixture that looms as a must-win in the top-four race.
The Royals have been in formidable form, reeling off five consecutive victories before the break – a run that’s delivered 18 goals and seen them concede just eight. That surge has lifted the Royals into third place, but with Box Hill, Alamein, and South Melbourne all within touching distance, the fight for a top-four finish is well and truly alive.
FV Academy arrive in Essendon on the back of a heavy schedule and a difficult run of results. Their midweek catch-up game ended in a 5-1 defeat to Box Hill United, capping a challenging period in which they’ve managed just two wins since May.
While capable of troubling teams on their day – as shown in a 4-2 victory over Brunswick Juventus last month – consistency has been elusive, and they’ll have to contend with the added fatigue of a short turnaround.
The Royals will be without key defender Alana Cerne, who is on international duty with Australia’s U23s, but could be boosted by the return of top scorer Airi Fujiwara (12 goals) and midfield general Grace Maher after both missed the win over Bentleigh.
Emma Langley remains in excellent touch with eight goals for the season, while mid-season arrival Deven Jackson has quickly become a handful for opposition backlines, netting four times in just seven appearances. Fellow newcomer Olivia Wood has chipped in with three goals in eight matches, adding further bite to an already potent attack.
With fresh legs, home advantage, and a clear opportunity to strengthen their finals position, the Royals will be determined to make their quality count. But FV Academy’s youthful energy and unpredictability mean Essendon will need to be switched on from the first whistle to avoid any slip-ups.
Kick-off at Cross Keys Reserve is at 3:00 PM this Saturday, 16 August. A win would make it six on the bounce for Essendon and take them another big step towards September football.
