There are fixtures that feel routine.
This is not one of them.
When Essendon Royals SC meet Spring Hills FC, history tends to come with it.
The rivalry stretches back to the State League 1 days and rarely lacks edge. Last season, Spring Hills had the better of the contests, winning both meetings 3–1. They have proven something of a bogey side for the Royals in recent years.
They arrive in strong early form again, with the latest edition in this rivalry kicking off at 830PM on Friday night.
Following an opening round draw, Spring Hills defeated Melbourne City – NPL Seniors 1–0 last week courtesy of an early goal from Margaux Clarke. They defended resolutely across the remaining 85 minutes and sit fifth on the table with four points.
The Royals sit one point behind with one win to their name and know exactly where improvement is required.
Chances.
Across the opening rounds, Essendon have created enough moments to control games for longer spells than the scoreboard suggests. The difference has been efficiency in key areas, both in finishing and in defending transitions.
There is, however, plenty to be encouraged by.
US import Kelli McGroarty has made a superb start to life in the competition, registering three goals and one assist in her opening two matches. Her movement, directness and composure in front of goal have added a new dimension to the Royals’ attack. The next step is ensuring she is not the only avenue.
If Essendon can diversify their routes forward while maintaining defensive concentration, they are more than capable of troubling a Spring Hills side that thrives on discipline and patience.
Team news remains fluid. Kingston-Hogg continues to sit under an injury cloud after failing to recover in time to make the bench last week. Her availability will be monitored closely.
What is guaranteed is intensity.
These meetings tend to be tight, emotional and finely balanced. Neither side gives much away. Neither side needs extra motivation.
For the Royals, this is an opportunity to rewrite a recent narrative and secure crucal points in the race for NPLW finals.
Around the Grounds — NPL Victoria Women Round 3
Friday Night
Box Hill United Pythagoras FC vs Preston Lions FC
Wembley Park | 7:30pm
Box Hill have already shown their scoring power this season, but they face a Preston side that remains unbeaten and sits inside the top four. The Lions have built their early campaign on structure and defensive control, conceding just once in two matches. If Box Hill turn this into a transition-heavy contest, it opens up. If Preston control tempo, they’ll fancy their chances.
Saturday
Melbourne City – NPL Seniors vs Alamein FC
Postponed
FC Bulleen Lions vs Keilor Park SC
Veneto Club | 4:00pm
Bulleen are yet to register a point and will view this as a genuine opportunity. Keilor Park have drawn both matches so far and remain difficult to break down. Something has to give here.
Heidelberg United FC vs South Melbourne FC
Olympic Village | 4:15pm
One of the headline fixtures of the round. South Melbourne sit second and look balanced at both ends. Heidelberg are still finding rhythm. If South assert early control, they may consolidate their position near the summit.
Boroondara Eagles FC vs Bentleigh Greens SC
Veneto Club | 8:30pm
Boroondara lead the table with six points from two matches and have already scored seven goals. Bentleigh, meanwhile, have conceded heavily across the opening rounds. On form, this looks one-sided, but Friday night football has a way of reshuffling expectations.
Sunday
Melbourne Victory FC vs Avondale FC
Home of the Matildas | 3:00pm
Victory remain unbeaten and sit inside the top three. Avondale have shown they can score but have also been stretched defensively. This shapes as a contest of control versus counterattack, and it rounds out what is an evenly balanced Round 3.
