Two rounds in and Essendon Royals are one of three sides yet to register a point in 2026.
The urgency is real.
Saturday’s trip to face Springvale White Eagles FC presents an immediate opportunity to change that.
The Royals have scored four goals across the opening two rounds. The attacking output has not been the issue. The defensive numbers tell the fuller story. Six conceded in two matches has left little margin for error. At this level, averaging two goals per game means little if the opposition are given regular sight of goal.
Mick Ferrante’s side have shown they can create. They have also shown how costly defensive transitions and set-piece lapses can be. The next step is balance.
Springvale arrive with one draw and one defeat from their opening two fixtures. They opened the season with a 3–1 loss to Box Hill United Pythagoras FC before a goalless draw with Whittlesea United SC in Round 2, a match that offered few clear-cut chances.
This will be their third consecutive home game to begin the season. Familiar surroundings. No travel disruption. That matters early in the year.
History between these sides reinforces the warning.
The Royals claimed a 2–1 win at the Serbian Sports Centre last season but were comprehensively beaten 3–0 in the return fixture. Springvale are not a side to underestimate. They are organised, disciplined and capable of punishing defensive lapses.
Ferrante retains a largely healthy squad, though Andre Russo remains sidelined. Evan Markogiannakis continues to deputise in goal. Mike Romas made his return from the bench last week and will push for a starting role, competing for attacking positions alongside Jordan Adeyemi and Josh Markovski.
For Essendon, the equation is straightforward.
Limit opposition opportunities.
Protect defensive transitions.
Maintain the attacking fluency already evident.
The Royals do not need perfection. They need control. They need composure. And they need points.
Round 3 offers the chance to steady the season before the gap widens.
The time to respond is now.
