Essendon Royals’ first appearance at Nasiol Stadium ended in a 3–2 defeat to Goulburn Valley Suns, with a damaging opening 35 minutes proving decisive.

Mick Ferrante named an unchanged starting XI from Round 1, adjusting only his bench options. What followed, however, was a first half defined by defensive transitions that repeatedly punished the Royals.

The Suns struck early in the eighth minute through Mohammed Al-Gazaly, capitalising on a poorly defended set piece just as the Royals were beginning to build promising forward momentum.

The second goal arrived on the counter. After the Royals committed numbers forward, the Suns broke efficiently and Curtis Hughes finished from distance in the 30th minute to make it 2–0.

Five minutes later came the decisive blow. With the Royals pushing again, possession turned over and Hughes struck for his second of the night in the 35th minute, leaving Essendon 3–0 down before half-time.

It was a ruthless demonstration of the cost of losing defensive balance.

To their credit, the Royals responded after the break.

Jordan Adeyemi opened his account for the season in the 49th minute, forcing his way into the area and finishing from a tight angle to give the home side a foothold.

The tempo lifted. The pressing sharpened. The urgency returned.

Adeyemi struck again in the 83rd minute, reacting quickest in a crowded penalty area to reduce the deficit to 3–2 and set up a tense final stretch.

A late handball appeal added to the frustration, but the reality remained clear. The result was shaped by the opening half hour, not by the officials.

Two games into 2026 and the Royals are yet to collect a point. The second-half response showed fight and attacking intent. The first-half lapses highlighted the standard required over a full 90 minutes.

The focus now shifts to delivering that standard consistently.
