Timing is everything in football. And the timing of this fixture could not be sharper.
Essendon Royals host Malvern City FC at Nasiol Stadium this Friday night (8:30pm) in the second of three scheduled home fixtures at the venue before the return to Cross Keys in April. This is a ticketed event, with tickets available at the gate.
The Royals arrive with momentum for the first time this season. Last Saturday’s 2-1 win at Springvale White Eagles delivered more than three points. It delivered proof that this group has the character to respond when things get difficult.
Jordan Adeyemi has been at the centre of everything good. His curling free kick in the 29th minute against Springvale levelled the match and shifted the momentum. Josh Markovski’s finish four minutes before half-time completed the turnaround. Three goals from three rounds for Adeyemi, and a growing sense that the attacking combinations are clicking.
But the early-season pattern remains a concern. Essendon have conceded inside the opening ten minutes in each of their first three matches. Against Nunawading, it was the eighth minute. Against Goulburn Valley, the eighth again. At Springvale, the sixth.
That matters, because Friday night’s visitors have made fast starts a weapon.
Malvern City sit top of VPL Men 2 with a perfect record. Three wins from three. Nine goals scored, four conceded. They are the only unbeaten side in the competition.
Promoted from State League, Malvern have not simply adjusted to the step up. They have dominated it. Round 1 saw them put five past Bayside Argonauts at Egan Lee Reserve, with Michael Hornsby scoring a hat-trick inside 73 minutes and Stephen MacDonald adding a brace. A composed 2-0 win at Box Hill followed in Round 2. Then a 2-1 victory over Whittlesea in Round 3, where Hornsby struck twice in the opening 17 minutes before his side held firm.
Hornsby has five goals in three games. He has scored in the 4th minute, the 6th minute, and the 10th. MacDonald has three. Between them, they account for eight of Malvern’s nine goals this season. Former A-League forward Jai Ingham adds experience and quality across the park.
The challenge is clear. If the Royals give Malvern the kind of head start they have offered opponents in the opening rounds, the league leaders will punish them.
What Saturday at Springvale showed, though, is that this squad can absorb a blow and hit back. Dean Clarke’s energy from deep, Adrian Zahra and Vince Lia’s control through the middle, and the growing understanding across the front line suggest a side finding its feet rather than struggling with the demands of the division.
A win on Friday would lift the Royals into the top half. More importantly, it would confirm that the Springvale result was a turning point, not a one-off.
Around the Grounds – VPL Men 2 Round 4
Friday Night
Keilor Park SC vs Nunawading City FC
Keilor Park Recreation Reserve | 8:30pm
Keilor Park arrive with momentum after a 3-2 win at Moreland last round, their first of the season. Nunawading sit fourth on six points and thumped Eastern Lions 3-1 in Round 3. A genuine test of whether Keilor Park’s late-season spark is sustainable against one of the form sides.
Saturday
Moreland City SC vs Kingston City FC
Campbell Reserve | 2:00pm
Kingston have been one of the quieter stories of the early season, sitting second with seven points and still unbeaten after two wins and a draw. Moreland will be stinging after last week’s 3-2 home defeat to Keilor Park and need a response. A test of whether Kingston’s early consistency is the real deal.
Box Hill United Pythagoras FC vs Bayside Argonauts FC
Wembley Park | 3:00pm
Two mid-table sides with four points apiece. Box Hill salvaged a 3-3 draw at Werribee last round after winning their opener 3-1 at Springvale. Bayside followed their 5-3 Round 1 defeat to Malvern with a thumping 4-0 win at Werribee before a goalless draw at Kingston. Unpredictable on both sides.
Werribee City FC vs Whittlesea United SC
Costas Mitre 10 Park | 3:00pm
Werribee are still searching for a win, with their only point coming from last week’s 3-3 draw with Box Hill after a 4-0 home loss to Bayside in Round 2. Whittlesea opened the season with a win at Goulburn Valley but have taken just one point since. Both sides need a result to avoid drifting toward the bottom.
Altona City SC vs Springvale White Eagles FC
HC Kim Reserve | 6:15pm
A tough week for both clubs. Altona were dismantled 5-1 by Goulburn Valley Suns in Round 3 after a solid start to the season. Springvale sit second from bottom with one point from three matches. An important fixture at the lower end of the table where neither can afford another defeat.
Eastern Lions SC vs Goulburn Valley Suns FC
Gardiners Creek Reserve | 6:15pm
The Suns arrive in ominous form. Back-to-back wins, including a 5-1 demolition of Altona last round, have them sitting third on six points with nine goals scored. Eastern Lions have lost their last two after an opening day win and were beaten 3-1 by Nunawading in Round 3. Goulburn Valley will be heavy favourites here.
