Ten points separate third from first. On Saturday the Royals will find out if they can bridge the gap.
Malvern City have led the VPL2 title race for weeks. The runaway pace-setters with 37 points, 12 wins from 16, a +20 goal difference They are the benchmark every chasing side measures itself against, and on Saturday evening the Royals are the chasing side knocking on the door.
Mick Ferrante’s men come off the back of an eight-goal performance against Springvale White Eagles, a night when Marcus Kotronis helped himself to four, and a young forward marked a first senior goal worth remembering. At just 16 years of age, Christian Lykopoulos had already netted 11 goals across the U20s and U23s this year, and earned his spot in the senior side.
The Royals’ season thus far has been rocks or diamonds: Essendon are the only side in VPL2 to have not drawn a game in 2026. The unimpeachable home record at Cross Keys Reserve has been broken up by successive 1-0 defeats on the road, and the Royals will hope to buck that trend at Egan Lee Reserve on Saturday.
Malvern claimed the points when the two sides met earlier this season at Broadmeadows, with the visitors two goals ahead before Brad Norton received his marching orders. The 10-man Royals pulled a goal back through Josh Markovski in the second half, but the damage was done.
Malvern’s dominant run has wobbled of late, since the 2-1 reverse against in-form Box Hill two weeks ago. The match ended in controversy, with an all-in fracas and a red card to key attacker Stephen MacDonald. Without the suspended forward, Malvern suffered a surprise 1-0 loss to mid-table Whittlesea United last week, thanks to a spectacular late curler from Koray Cekic.
The maths is plain enough. The Royals trail Malvern by ten points and GV Suns by six points with nine rounds still to play. A result here changes what is possible. Few fixtures all season offer a clearer read on where this Royals side actually stands.
Kick-off Saturday 5:00pm.
Forza Royals.
