Six rounds left, two above still in reach, and no easy night anywhere on the calendar. This is the stretch where a promotion push is either proven or found out, and Friday takes the Royals to Epping to face a side who have made a habit of spoiling good runs.
Essendon sit third in VPL Men 2 on thirty-seven points from twenty games, locked into both the automatic-promotion chase and the playoff picture. The two sides above have the edge for now, with Goulburn Valley Suns leading on forty-two and Malvern City second on forty, and both hold a game in hand having played one fewer. That is the maths of the run-in. The Royals cannot control what happens above them, only that they keep winning and force the issue, and with the margins this fine every result carries weight.
The good news is that this group arrives in the kind of form that makes chasing feel realistic. Last week’s 3-2 win over Box Hill was the hard-earned sort, a two-goal lead surrendered to 2-2 before Frank Mulhern settled it late, and it followed an 8-0 rout of Springvale and a statement 4-2 win away at then-leaders Malvern City. This is a side that scores freely and, just as importantly, keeps finding a way when a match turns awkward. Those are the two qualities a promotion campaign is built on, and Essendon have shown both.
None of which makes Friday anything close to a formality. Whittlesea United sit seventh on twenty-seven points, but the table flatters the visitors far more than it warns them. The hosts have won four of their last six, a run that includes a 1-0 win over Malvern City, a 4-0 dismantling of Werribee, and a 3-1 result against Box Hill. That is a confident, in-form home side with the scalps to prove they can hurt anyone, and Epping is not a ground where the Royals can afford a slow start.
The man to watch wears Whittlesea colours. Brayden Portelli is the division’s danger, their leading scorer with ten league goals this season, and keeping him quiet is the single clearest route to three points. Give him nothing, stay patient against a side that will fancy an upset, and Essendon have the firepower to win this on the road as they did at Malvern.
The task is simple to state and hard to do. Take care of the danger, back the attack that has carried this run, and come home from Epping with three points that keep the pressure firmly on the two above.
