Essendon travelled to a Bayside Argonauts side sitting fourth and fresh in the promotion conversation, fell behind, and dug out a 1-1 draw that keeps them exactly where they were: third in VPL Men 2 and still very much in the hunt. Sung put the hosts in front just before the hour, and the Royals needed a response against a team with every reason to shut the game down. Trajkoski provided it with twenty minutes to play, levelling the contest and earning Essendon a point that, on the balance of a tight afternoon, was no less than they deserved.
It was the kind of fixture the table always promised. Bayside arrived on thirty-one points and unbeaten at home for long stretches of the season, the Royals on thirty-four and chasing the two sides above them. Games between the division’s top four rarely produce a hatful of chances, and this one followed the script, a cagey, physical afternoon in which the margins were fine and a single moment either way was always likely to decide it.
Falling behind tested the character of a side that has spent the season near the summit, and the answer was emphatic enough. Rather than let the game drift, the Royals pushed for the leveller and got it through Trajkoski, and the closing stages became a question of who wanted the winner more. Neither side found it, and a draw was the fair outcome of an even contest.
The wider picture is a mixed one. A point away at a top-four rival is never to be sniffed at, and it maintains Essendon’s cushion over Bayside to three. The frustration is at the other end of the table, where Malvern City and Goulburn Valley Suns both took maximum points and nudged the gap to top spot out to six. The Royals have games in hand on nobody up there, so the margin for slip-ups is tightening, and afternoons like this become about banking what you can when the win will not come.
Third is still a strong position with the run-in approaching, and Essendon have shown all season they belong in this company. The response now needs to be at home. Box Hill United, fifth and only a point behind Bayside, visit on Friday night, and after two away assignments the Royals will fancy putting the pressure back on the sides above them in front of their own supporters.
Come behind them once more, get that home form humming, and the top two are still within touching distance. A point at Bayside keeps the door open. The job now is to force it open.
