Essendon Royals bolster football department with appointment of Female Technical Director Angie Rassias

The Essendon Royals have appointed Angie Rassias as the club’s Female Football Technical Director to meet the growing needs of its female football program.

With continued significant growth in the number of female playing members at our club, the Royals appointed a Female Technical Director to ensure greater attention to detail for our female teams, players, coaches and volunteers.

This appointment also means we have a dedicated Boys Technical Director in Michael Curcija.

Working under our Head of Football, Vaughan Coveny, Rassias joins a growing football department committed to ensuring the best possible outcomes and – most importantly – experience for every Essendon Royals player.

Rassias is no stranger to the Royals, and formed a crucial part of our hugely successful Senior Women’s program in 2022, and having being identified as a leader amongst her peers and with demonstrable junior coaching experience, Senior Women’s Coach Vince Battiato keenly recommended for the role.

Rassias will be working closely with Battiato to help identify junior players with the potential to eventually become a part of the Senior Women’s program and assist our junior girls coaches with coach education, support and training programs.

“As a player, I think being a leader and sharing what I’ve learned and what I think about the game is something that has always come naturally to me,” Rassias said.

“So I was very excited to learn about this role that the club was creating and implementing. I think it’s a very important role and as I get towards the end of my playing career, I think it was just a natural step to take.”

Rassias joined the Royals as a player in 2022 and was quickly amazed with the depth of the club’s junior girls program, which in 2022 exceeded 10 teams.

“When I got here, I didn’t realise just how successful the junior program was. Credit has to go to Michael and Vaughan and the committee for the great job they have done setting up and implementing a program that attracts so many players and has enjoyed significant success on the field as well,” she said.

“For me, I’m just so excited to be able to play a role in the development of this program and the players and coaches within it.

“I think there are so many honourable people at the club who volunteer so much time, whether that’s as coaches or as team managers, and I really want to be a great outlet for them that they can come to for help anything football related.

“Whether that’s helping them work through training drills or programs to achieve a specific goal, or whether that identifying individuals with potential and helping them through the system and achieve that potential, or simply being there on a training night to support a session, I think there are so many ways that this role can support the development of women’s football at the club.”

Whilst Rassias will be looking after the female football program, she will work hand in hand with Coveny and Curcija to ensure that knowledge from right across the club is disemminated effectively to the club’s female teams, their players and their coaches.

“I really want to be able to build a strong rapport with the families and resourcing our players and coaches with everything they need to achieve their best.”

The Royals are excited to welcome Rassias into this newly created role and can’t wait to see her working closely with our junior female teams.

Rassias is likely to be joined in taking a greater involvement in the club’s junior program by a number of her teammates, ensuring there will be significant visibility for our juniors of our senior women’s team and the pathway to it and beyond.
