Essendon Royals head coach Mick Ferrante has acknowledged the challenges his squad has faced in the opening games of the season but remains optimistic that their fortunes can change quickly.
The coach emphasised his belief in the team’s ability to turn things around as they prepare for their next match against Goulburn Valley Suns.
Ferrante commented on the tough competition likely to be presented by the Suns, noting, “We’re not expecting an easy game. By all accounts, they’re a good outfit, and they’ve had some good results,” he said.
“We haven’t had the best start, but we’re looking to get our season up and running.
“Performance-wise, I don’t think we’ve been that far off the pace, but the results haven’t been going our way. It’s something we’ll keep working on.”
Ferrante said that at times the team had been guilty of putting itself under pressure, with every mistake proving costly.
“Every mistake we make is getting punished, but that’s the difference this year,” he said.
“Defence was really what got us promoted last year, but maybe we were getting away with some things last year that we’re not this year. We make one mistake and it’s in the back of the net. I don’t think we’re far off it, but there’s work to be done, and we’ll rectify it by hook or by crook.”
Despite the lack of wins, the coach expressed optimism about the team’s offensive capabilities.
“The way the first three games went, we had enough chances in those three games to win seven or eight games,” he said.
“So that’s a concern, but it’s not as concerning as if the chances weren’t being created. Hopefully, the penny drops sooner rather than later. We’ll keep creating those chances, and it’s impossible for us to continue making these chances and not score.”
In the face of adversity, Ferrante’s unwavering confidence in his team and their ability to bounce back reflects a determination to succeed. As the Royals prepare to face the Goulburn Valley Suns, the coach’s belief in his squad’s potential may just be the catalyst they need to turn their season around.
