Essendon Royals made a stunning statement in their Round 10 Victorian Premier League Women’s (VPLW) clash, powering to a resounding 5-0 victory over Melbourne University.
The match at Cross Keys Reserve was marked by an early dominance from the Royals, as they wasted no time in asserting their control. The opening exchanges saw the home side peppering the goal, looking to test the University’s keeper on the slippery surface.
In the 14th minute, Marie Rampal embarked on a terrific run down the right flank, but her cross flashed across the face of goal with no one there to convert. The Royals’ attacking intent was evident, with Rosie Wild and Mary Hubeek both having attempts from range, but they were initially unable to find the net.
The breakthrough came in the 22nd minute, with Yuria Sasaki scoring a delightful goal from just outside the box. Her low, hard strike gave the University keeper no chance and put the Royals in the lead.
Towards the end of the first half, the Royals were given a scare. Following a brilliant save from Jacqueline Broadfoot, Melbourne University rattled the crossbar from the resulting corner, serving as a stark reminder that there was still plenty of football to play.
In the second half, the Royals’ attacking prowess continued to shine. Rebecca Davies scored a stunner from the right wing, extending the Royals’ lead to 2-0. Davies’ fantastic performance saw her force another good save from a free kick.
Linda Sawa then added to the scoreline in the 53rd minute with a brilliantly placed finish into the far bottom corner. Hubeek continued to challenge the University keeper with a great run and curled finish, but her effort was tipped wide.
Ayano Koizumi added a fourth in the 82nd minute, tapping in after the University keeper could only parry a shot from range. The scoring spree continued when Filomena Delic was played through and found the net with a cool finish to make it 5-0.
This significant victory secured a crucial three points for the Royals, a testament to the team’s grit and determination.
