Women’s Match Report: Royals leave Geelong Galaxy with all three VPLW points

In an exhilarating display of skill and strategy, the Essendon Royals Women’s team triumphed over Geelong Galaxy United in a 3-0 victory in the VPLW Round 13 encounter.

Entering the match with a sense of caution, the Royals were well aware of the challenges presented by the long road-trip to Geelong and facing an in-form side that has proven a challenge for some of the league’s top teams this season. However, the Royals’ determination and preparation were evident from the start.

The match kicked off with Geelong energetically throwing numbers forward, but they struggled to pierce the Royals’ expertly marshalled defence, with Mikaela Jurcic and Talia White at the heart of it. The Royals absorbed the early pressure and gradually found their rhythm, controlling much of the first half.

Their dominance was rewarded in the 33rd minute when midfielder Rosie Wild showcased her prowess, stooping low to meet a beautifully executed corner and directing it hard and low into the back of the net. The Royals barely had time to celebrate before another dangerous corner just two minutes later resulted in a scramble on the goal line, forcing a Geelong defender to inadvertently knock the ball into her own net, doubling the Royals’ lead before half-time.

The second half proved more challenging for the Royals as Galaxy threw everything at them in a bid to turn the tide. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to penetrate the resolute Royals’ defence.

The Royals then sealed the deal in the 81st minute with a piece of brilliance. Wild, turning provider, released Marie Rampal down the right flank. Rampal’s picture-perfect cross found Filomena Delic at the far post, who finished with a powerful header, bringing the scoreline to 3-0.

In the Royals goal, Jacqueline Broadfoot demonstrated her stunning reactions to get across and tip a strong header on target from a Galaxy corner wide of the post to ensure she kept her much-deserved clean sheet.

Despite the tough second half, the Royals showcased their grit and resilience, ensuring they had enough in the tank to bring the victory home.

This win serves as a testament to the Royals’ preparation, adaptability, and perseverance, qualities that will be essential as they continue their campaign in the VPLW. The team now looks forward to building on this momentum in their upcoming matches, aiming to maintain top spot in the league.
