In a thrilling encounter at Cross Keys Reserve, Essendon Royals showcased their prowess with a commanding 3-0 victory over Box Hill United FC. The Royals, with their attacking flair and defensive solidity, proved too much for the visitors, who were reduced to ten men in a game that had its fair share of drama.

The atmosphere was electric from the start, with the Royals faithful turning up in numbers, eagerly anticipating the kick-off. The home side didn’t disappoint, setting the tone early on. Just five minutes into the game, Dean Clarke, with his signature footwork, carved out the first real opportunity. His shot from a tight angle was on target, but the Box Hill keeper was up to the task.

As the game progressed, the Royals continued to press, and in the 24th minute, Graham Kelly had a golden opportunity. Unfortunately, he couldn’t find the finish, letting Box Hill off the hook. But the breakthrough was imminent.

The 29th minute saw Clarke produce a moment of sheer brilliance. Receiving a pinpoint switch from Santilli, he turned his marker, drove inside, and unleashed a thunderbolt that left the goalkeeper with no chance. The Royals were up and running.

The momentum was firmly with the home side, and just four minutes later, Matthew Breeze doubled the advantage. His sublime free-kick from the corner found the far top corner, leaving the Box Hill defense stunned.

However, the game took a dark turn in the 37th minute. A reckless challenge left Royals’ captain Matteo Ballan in agony. The challenge, which saw the Box Hill player receive a straight red card, resulted in Ballan being stretchered off, casting a shadow over the game.

But the Royals, undeterred by the setback, continued their onslaught. Clarke, in scintillating form, found the net again in the 44th minute. Picking up the ball on the right, he cut inside and fired home, taking his tally to two for the night and giving the Royals a comfortable 3-0 lead going into halftime.

The second half saw Box Hill trying to mount a comeback, but the Royals’ defense, led by Andre Russo, was impenetrable. In the 53rd minute, a scramble in the Royals’ box was expertly dealt with by Russo, who later made a crucial save in a one-on-one situation to maintain the clean sheet.

Youngster Jack Warrick once again impressed in defence, as did young Marcus Lagana, who came in for the injured Ballan and did well.

Clarke, who was a constant menace, came close to completing his hat-trick in the 62nd minute, striking the post after a well-worked short corner routine with Breeze.

The final whistle confirmed the Royals’ dominance, sealing a crucial 3-0 victory for the Royals.
