Essendon Royals is excited to announce the signing of former Calder United captain Ava Groba for the upcoming 2024 NPLW season. Groba, a dynamic attacking midfielder, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the Royals, having captained Calder United.
Groba’s journey in football has been marked by consistent growth and impressive performances. “I’ve been at Calder for eight years, playing several seasons in the seniors, and last year I had the honour of being the captain,” Ava shared. “I’m looking forward to bringing those leadership qualities and experiences to the Royals.”
Her eye for goal was evident in the 2023 season, where she scored five goals in 17 games, showcasing her ability to make a significant impact from the midfield. Ava’s transition to the Royals was influenced by the club’s philosophy, as she explained, “Vince [Battiato] reached out to me and shared his vision. One thing that resonated with me was his belief that happy people make great footballers and the importance of balance in life and football.”
Ava also highlighted the challenges and learning experiences from playing at the top level. “The pace of the game is much quicker, and your decisions have to be so much faster. Professionalism is key, and focusing on those 1 percenters really makes a difference,” she said.
Since joining the Royals, Ava has quickly integrated with the team. “The girls have been welcoming, and we’ve been playing well together in our games. I’ve enjoyed contributing in the midfield and on the wing. I’m really excited for what 2024 holds with Essendon Royals,” she added enthusiastically.
Ava Groba’s arrival at Essendon Royals is a significant addition to the squad, promising an exciting season ahead in the NPLW.
