Women’s Match Report: Royals Edged Out in Historic Home Debut Against Boroondara Eagles

On a landmark Saturday that saw Essendon Royals Senior Women’s side play their inaugural home game in the NPLW at Cross Keys Reserve, the Royals experienced the narrowest of defeats, a 2-1 loss to the Boroondara Eagles.

The match, coming off the back of a remarkable victory over Heidelberg United, was poised as an opportunity for the Royals to cement their strong start to the season. Filomena Delic’s opener in the 13th minute was a display of tactical ingenuity—a well-rehearsed throw-in routine finished with precision, her looping shot capturing the optimism around the Royals’ historic homecoming.

However, the five-day turnaround appeared to take its toll, as the Eagles, exuding organization and competitive spirit, levelled the playing field. Anais Josefski’s 33rd-minute goal for Boroondara came as the fruit of Murphy’s intelligent off-the-ball run, creating the space needed for a close-range finish.

The Eagles carried their momentum into the second half, with Roisin Murphy again turning provider, this time for Gabrielle Hollar, who in the 59th minute found herself unmarked to convert a crucial goal, tipping the balance in favour of the visitors.

The Royals showcased their resilience throughout the contest. Danielle Marshall’s return to the heart of defence was a welcome sight, and Kendrah Smith’s midfield tenacity proved instrumental in driving the team forward.

Delic, who not only etched her name on the scoresheet but also posed a persistent threat, was emblematic of the Royals’ attacking intent. However, despite the Royals’ fervent efforts, the Eagles’ disciplined approach and timely interventions paved the way for their victory.

The Royals now turn their focus to the commencement of their Nike FC Cup campaign, which they join in Round 4, having been drawn against State League opposition in Altona City.

In the earlier kick-off the Essendon Royals Under-20s enjoyed a strong 3-0 win, their first of the season. Goals to Chloe Harman, Phoebe Vivian and Lola Ferrante ensured the win for the Royals youngsters.
