Friday night at CB Smith Reserve saw Essendon Royals face a tough test against Brunswick Juventus, with the Royals falling to a 2-0 defeat in a closely contested VPL2 matchup. The game marked the Royals’ first league loss of the season, bringing an end to their impressive unbeaten run.
The match began with both sides showing urgency, but it was Brunswick that created the first significant chance. An exceptional last-ditch challenge from Brad Norton was required to deny Micallef, whose effort was deflected onto the post following a rapid break led by Batchelor.
Responding quickly, the Royals advanced upfield where Jordan Adeyemi delivered a dangerous cross that narrowly missed connecting with Graham Kelly, highlighting the end-to-end nature of the contest. Despite some resolute defending, including a goal-line clearance by Matteo Ballan, Brunswick broke the deadlock at the 20-minute mark. A lapse in the Royals’ defense allowed Bounas to poke home from close range, capitalizing on a failure to clear the ball effectively.
The Royals endeavored to respond, with Clarke and Georgopoulos combining well but finding the final execution lacking. Brunswick continued to press, nearly doubling their lead, but Andre Russo stood tall, making a crucial save to keep the scoreline manageable heading into halftime.
Adjustments at the break brought Julian Guzzardi into the fray, and he was involved immediately, although his efforts, alongside those of his teammates, couldn’t pierce a stout Brunswick defense. The home side extended their lead in the 67th minute through an unfortunate own goal by Yusuke Nishiyama, redirecting a set-piece into his own net, compounding the Royals’ challenges.
Efforts to salvage something from the game were further hampered when Kelly suffered a hamstring injury, forcing him off in the 70th minute. His replacement, Ali Eyigun, nearly made an instant impact with a finely struck free-kick that was brilliantly saved by Choi.
Despite late efforts and a flurry of set pieces from Eyigun, the Royals could not find the breakthrough, and the game ended 2-0 in favor of Brunswick Juventus. This result was a tough pill for the Royals, but the performance contained positive elements, including their continued fight and resilience against a strong opponent.
As the Royals regroup and look ahead to their next fixture, they will take lessons from this defeat, aiming to return stronger and reignite their campaign in the VPL2.
In the earlier kick-off, the Under-23s suffered a 4-2 defeat.
