Men’s Match Report: Royals Secure Hard-Fought Victory Over Beaumaris

Essendon Royals returned to winning ways with a determined 1-0 victory over Beaumaris at Cross Keys Reserve on Friday night. A first-half strike from Brad Norton was enough to seal the three points for the Royals, who showed resilience and tactical discipline throughout the match.

The Royals started the match with intent, taking control of the midfield and pressing high up the pitch. Youngster Marcus Kotronis once again impressed with his willingness to take on defenders, creating early opportunities for his teammates. Despite dominating possession, the Royals had to remain vigilant as Beaumaris threatened on the break, hitting the post from a corner in the 25th minute.

Just two minutes later, the breakthrough came for Essendon. A well-placed free-kick from Graham Kelly tested the Beaumaris goalkeeper, who managed to clear the initial danger. However, the ball was quickly recycled by Matteo Ballan, who sent a long diagonal pass to Dean Clarke. Clarke’s cross into the box was knocked down towards Brad Norton, who unleashed a thunderous left-footed strike that cannoned in off the crossbar, giving the Royals a 1-0 lead.

The first half ended with Essendon in control, but the team knew they needed to stay sharp to maintain their advantage. The second half saw the Royals pushing for a second goal to put the game beyond doubt. In the 66th minute, William Thomason tried his luck from range, but his speculative effort went wide.

As the clock ticked down, Clarke had a shot blocked in the 74th minute, with the rebound falling to Vince Lia, whose long-range effort narrowly missed the post. Norton’s chance for a second goal came in the 89th minute, but his header went over the bar.

Beaumaris continued to search for an equaliser and had a final opportunity in stoppage time, but their shot was off target. The Royals held firm to secure a much-needed victory.
