Match Report: Royals Clinch Finals Spot with 3-1 Comeback Victory Over Bentleigh

In a critical NPLW Victoria clash at Cross Keys Reserve, the Essendon Royals overcame a first-half deficit to secure a 3-1 victory against Bentleigh Greens, cementing their place in the finals in their debut season.

The Royals began the game under challenging circumstances, and they were forced to make several late adjustments. With key players Audrey Oastler and Julia Sardo unavailable, Coach Vince Battiato had to restructure his lineup, introducing Raquel Deralas in the attack and teenager Olivia Ristevski into the defensive setup.

Despite these disruptions, the Royals started assertively, controlling possession and creating opportunities. However, Bentleigh, fighting to avoid relegation, proved to be tenacious opponents, capitalising on their chances on the break.

The Greens took the lead in the 35th minute through Gabby Simpson, who found the net following a sequence that began with a robust press and a saved attempt from Coco Parker. Simpson’s goal gave Bentleigh a crucial lead heading into halftime, putting pressure on the Royals to respond.

Emerging from the break with renewed vigour, the Royals immediately signalled their intent. Raquel Deralas, often pivotal in crucial moments, equalized in the 47th minute with a sharp finish at the near post from an Ava Groba cross sparked by a brilliant pass from Kendrah Smith.

TJ Vlajnic, always a threat on the flank, turned the game around in the 57th minute. After an initial save from the Bentleigh goalkeeper, Vlajnic was quick to react, slotting home the rebound to give the Royals a 2-1 lead.

As the match concluded, the Royals sealed their victory in the 89th minute through substitute Filomena Delic. Capitalizing on a defensive error, Delic rounded the goalkeeper and calmly completed the scoring, ensuring her team a 3-1 win.

This victory was even sweeter as results elsewhere confirmed the Royals’ place in the NPLW finals. South Melbourne’s loss to Box Hill United ensured the Royals’ lead over their closest finals contender was insurmountable.

The Royals’ performance, characterised by determination and adaptability, showcased their depth and readiness for finals football. With the regular season nearing its end, the Royals are poised to make an impact in their first finals appearance and have a solid foundation to build on for future campaigns.
