Essendon Royals came out on top in a pulsating Friday night contest at Genis Steel Stadium, edging out Preston Lions 4-3 in a match that delivered plenty of drama and goals.
The Royals took an early lead after just 14 minutes when Deven Jackson raced onto a clever long ball, outpacing the Lions’ defence before calmly finishing past the keeper. But the hosts swiftly responded, Miri Nishimura capitalising on a scramble in the box to level the scores at 1-1.
Essendon restored their advantage in the 27th minute from the penalty spot, with debutant Grace Maher confidently converting to mark her first goal for the club. Just before half-time, Jackson doubled her personal tally, once again breaking clear and slotting into an empty net to give the Royals a commanding 3-1 lead at the break.
Preston weren’t about to lie down, and their determined second-half performance set up a tense finale. Georgia Henderson reduced the deficit to 3-2 with a strong back-post header in the 76th minute. But with just six minutes remaining, Fujiwara Airi appeared to secure victory for Essendon, delicately lifting the ball over the goalkeeper amidst another scramble in the area.
However, there was still time for late drama. Preston’s Mebae Tanaka struck through a crowded box in the 90th minute, setting Royals’ nerves jangling in stoppage time. Essendon held their nerve, though, clinching a hard-earned three points.
Deven Jackson’s brace highlighted an excellent attacking display, while debutant Grace Maher immediately showed her quality. The Royals’ resilience was also on show, managing to withstand a fierce late rally from the home side.
