Men’s Match Report: Royals Slump Continues in Heavy Home Defeat

Essendon Royals’ difficult run of form took another hit at Cross Keys Reserve on Saturday evening, falling to a disappointing 4-1 defeat against a hungrier and sharper Geelong SC side.

Geelong started strongly and quickly capitalised through Bruno Gervasoni in the 11th minute. Giovanni Calosi then took centre stage, scoring two quickfire goals in the 24th and 34th minutes, effectively putting the game beyond the Royals before half-time.

Essendon shuffled the deck at the break, making multiple substitutions to stem the tide, but Calosi completed his hat-trick in the 74th minute, piling on further frustration for the Royals faithful.

Graham Kelly’s late consolation goal in the 89th minute provided scant comfort, as Essendon fell to a comprehensive 4-1 defeat.

The result leaves the Royals precariously placed on the edge of playoff contention, with several sides breathing down their necks. A rapid turnaround in fortunes is now essential if Essendon hopes to salvage their season and keep promotion ambitions alive.
