Women’s Match Report: Royals Seize Top-Four Spot with Crucial Win Over Alamein

Essendon Royals continued their remarkable charge towards finals football with a gritty and determined 2-1 victory away at Alamein FC, securing a spot inside the coveted NPLW top four.

Coming off an exhilarating 5-3 win at Bulleen, Essendon entered this crucial encounter brimming with confidence and knowing exactly what was at stake. With South Melbourne unexpectedly stumbling at home to Box Hill United, the Royals seized the opportunity to leapfrog their rivals and move into fourth position.

The match began brightly for the Royals, who nearly took an early lead through Olivia Wood. A neat move saw Fujiwara Airi cleverly find Wood inside the box, but the forward’s composed shot was held securely by the Alamein keeper.

The visitors eventually made their pressure count just after the half-hour mark, thanks to the in-form Fujiwara. Picked out by an excellent sweeping pass from Emma Langley, Fujiwara surged into the area from a tight angle, cutting sharply past her defender before unleashing a fierce shot into the net.

Alamein quickly responded, however, capitalising on a defensive lapse. Maximilia’s persistent pressing forced a turnover from Alana Cerne, and she raced clear to level the score just before halftime.

With the scores locked at the break, Essendon emerged for the second half knowing their finals ambitions depended on finding another breakthrough.

That crucial goal arrived in the 56th minute. After Alamein cleared a dangerous cross from Rebekah Van Dort, Mikaela Jurcic sent the ball straight back into the penalty area. The Alamein defence hesitated, misjudging the bouncing ball, and Langley reacted quickest, bravely stretching out to volley home what proved to be the winner.

Alamein searched desperately for another equaliser, but Royals keeper Zara Board stood firm, producing a smart near-post save in the 73rd minute to preserve Essendon’s advantage.

The Royals saw out the game with resilience and composure, claiming all three points in a match that could prove pivotal in their season.

The win moves Essendon Royals into fourth place, opening a three-point gap over Alamein and setting up an exciting run-in towards finals.
