Geelong Holiday Inn & Suites Match Preview: Royals Out to Seize Crucial Points at Epping

With two games to play, there is not a single game in VPL2 that does not have season-changing consequences for every team involved.

And for the Essendon Royals, the stakes are simple. Playoffs and the chance of promotion, or another season in VPL2.

Three points on Friday night is a must to maintain control of the Royals’ play-off destiny.

Anything less, and the door opens for the chasing pack.

Friday night’s trip to Epping Stadium to face Whittlesea United is another must-win fixture in a season that has tightened alarmingly for the Royals. Sitting sixth, just one point clear of seventh-placed Altona City, Mick Ferrante’s men know the margin for error has evaporated.

It’s a frustrating reality for a side that topped the VPL2 table at the halfway mark, having matched or beaten every team above them. But dropped points against teams in the lower reaches – Werribee, Geelong, Nunawading and Pascoe Vale – have left Essendon in a far more precarious position than they would have expected.

Whittlesea, meanwhile, are fighting for their own survival. Tenth on the ladder, they’re only three points clear of bottom-placed Pascoe Vale in a relegation battle that could yet claim any of the bottom five. United will treat this as a cup final, and the Royals know they’ll get nothing for free on Friday night.

Essendon took the points when the sides last met back in May, with youngster Maze Ali bagging both goals in a 2-1 win. But Ferrante’s selection options remain a puzzle. Vince Lia will serve the second match of his suspension, while captain Graham Kelly and defensive rock Brad Norton both missed the draw with Goulburn Valley Suns and are racing the clock to be fit. Phil Riccobene, who came off the bench at half-time in that match after taking a heavy knock the week before, will also be monitored.

Whoever takes the field will need to bring fierce competitiveness and a clinical edge. Three points at Epping would not only solidify Essendon’s hold on a playoff berth, but it could also reignite belief in a promotion run through the playoffs.
