Michael Curcija signs on as Technical Director for 2026

The Essendon Royals are delighted to announce that Michael Curcija will continue as Boys’ Technical Director for a seventh consecutive season in 2026.

As Technical Director, Curcija works closely with Head of Football Vaughan Coveny across our JBNPL and Community Boys programs to implement the club’s playing style, mentor coaches and help the next generation of Royals’ talent reach their potential.

“It’s a fantastic club full of great people, and we’ve been building on something for quite a few years now, so I’m happy to continue with that,” says Curcija.

“From day one, when I came in as senior coach, you could see everyone’s heart was in the right place… It’s a really inclusive club, and I’m proud to be a part of that.

“We’re a club that likes to develop from within. One of the aims of Vaughan and me is to really build a culture of loving Essendon Royals, and developing players to reach our senior team – and hopefully even beyond that.”

A former Socceroo and legend of the NSL, Curcija has been synonymous with the Royals for well over a decade. Initially joining the club as a player in 2004 and returning in 2013 as senior coach, a role he held until 2019, before transitioning to his current role.

With Curcija and Coveny both recommitting for 2026, the Royals have secured two of the key figures driving the club’s football vision, ensuring stability, continuity, and a clear plan for success in the years ahead.

A reminder that Expressions of Interest for our Pathway programs (both boys and girls) are now open.
