Essendon Royals are proud to announce the appointment of Lydia Schifferegger as the club’s new Assistant Junior/Community Girls Technical Director and Women’s Liaison Officer – a move that strengthens our commitment to growing the girls and women’s football program from the grassroots up.
A familiar face around the club, Lydia has been a key part of our Kick-Starters program for several years and continues to make her mark both on and off the pitch.
“I’ve always loved the club; the culture is so amazing,” Lydia said.
“I’ve been working with the Kick-Starters program for a couple of years now, and this role is something I’ve really looked forward to. I’m keen to get started with the girls program.”
Lydia brings a wealth of experience as both a player and coach. A former Royals senior player who helped the club to three promotions, she continues her playing career in State League 1, while also running a successful private coaching business that works closely with many Royals players.
Her new role will see her support girls’ programs across the club, from Under-8s through to senior women, working alongside Boys Technical Director Michael Curcija.
“We have such a big community here with so many girls. I want to get to know and get involved with all the teams, from Under-8s to the senior level programs,” Lydia said.
“I work with a lot of teenage girls already and feel like an older sister to them. We talk about anything, not just football. I enjoy helping them from a different perspective-not just as a coach, but someone who understands what they’re going through.”
Lydia says the growth of the girls program in recent years has been “incredible.”
“When I first came to the club, the program definitely wasn’t this big or as involved as it is now. It’s just growing and growing, every age group, so consistent. Everyone wants to come to this club. It’s a really good place to be.”
We’re thrilled to have Lydia step into this important role as the Royals continue to build pathways and opportunities for female players at every level.
