Royals Sign Defender Zac Kocankovski for 2026

Essendon Royals are thrilled to announce the signing of promising young defender Zac Kocankovski.

Kocankovski joins the Royals from Geelong Soccer Club after graduating from the Melbourne City and Western United youth teams, captaining Western’s NPL2 side in 2023.

The 22-year-old also spent two seasons abroad in Macedonia with Belasica and Bregalnica Stip.

“I wanted to join a club that has ambitions and has a goal to get promoted,” Kocankovski told Royals Media.

“Listening to what Mikey [Ferrante] and Davey [Van’t Schip] had to say, it was a no-brainer for me to come to the Royals.

“If we just stick together and work hard throughout the year, I think it’s very achievable.”

Kocankovski is set to add composure, physicality, and passing range to a Royals backline that was beset by injuries in 2025, strengthening the defensive options available to head coach Michael Ferrante.

“I like to say that I’m quite a ball-playing centre back. I like to drive with the ball and play passes and break lines,” he says.

“I also like to put in a challenge here and there, and I’ll pick up a yellow card if I have to.

“I just want to fight and give my all for my teammates, and always try to be there for them.”

Please give Zac a warm Royals welcome as we continue to build for 2026!
