Eliza Vargiu recommits as Royals full-back eyes bigger role in 2026

Essendon Royals are pleased to confirm that Eliza Vargiu has re-signed for the 2026 NPLW Victoria season, continuing her development within the senior women’s program.

Vargiu first broke into the senior side as a 15-year-old during the 2023 campaign, contributing to a season that delivered the VPLW Premiership and Championship double, along with the Nike FC Community Cup. Vargiu’s outstanding performance in the 2023 Nike FC Community Cup Final underlined her potential and composure beyond her years.

She earnt another taste of senior football in 2025, making her NPLW debut with two substitute appearances.

Now formally promoted to the first team squad, senior coach Jaiden Van Der Heijden believes Vargiu can play a bigger role in 2026.

“We’re excited to promote Eliza from the U20s,” he said.

“She’s a super hard worker who can play as a wing back or a winger.

“Eliza turns up the training with the right attitude and mentality, and we’re excited to see how far she can take her career this year.”

The Royals are delighted to see Eliza continue her journey at Cross Keys as part of an environment that values long-term development and commitment.
