Nicholas James Lawyers Men’s Match Report: Adeyemi Brace Lifts Royals in Must-Win at Werribee
Werribee City 1-3 Essendon Royals. Round 5. The match the preview called a six-pointer, and the Royals treated it like one.
For the first time this season, the Royals started the match. Not the second half. Not from behind. Jordan Adeyemi opened the scoring in the 31st minute and added a second before the break in the 44th. Two-nil at half-time, with the Royals in control and Werribee facing the kind of uphill battle they have become familiar with this season.
Marcus Kotronis sealed it in the 77th minute. 3-0, and the game was done. Stephan Mitre pulled one back for Werribee in the 84th, but it was a consolation and nothing more.
After four rounds at 13th with three points, the Royals jump to 9th on six. The goal difference is level. The bottom four is behind them. It is exactly the kind of response this group needed after a frustrating opening month.
The preview identified the problem clearly: conceding inside the opening quarter in every match, giving themselves too much to do. Saturday was the answer. Controlled from the start, clinical in front of goal, and comfortable throughout.
Three points. Out west. Job done.
