The Essendon Royals are thrilled to announce that Vaughan Coveny has recommitted to the club as Head of Football for the 2027 season.
Coveny arrived at the Royals in 2019 and has shaped the club’s football ever since, from helping get the junior boys NPL program off the ground in his first seasons to overseeing a pathway that now runs from Kick-Starters through to NPL and NPLW. He brought with him a playing career few in Australian football can match, as an NSL legend and a 64-time New Zealand international, and he remains one of the most respected youth coaches in the state, having led Victoria state teams to National Championship titles in consecutive years.
His remit covers the whole football department: raising coaching standards, building the pathway for emerging talent, and setting the culture that every Royals team trains and plays in. This year that included launching a new high performance program alongside John Psarras, giving our Kangaroos boys a third session a week outside their team training.
It has been a season to build on. The senior women finished second in NPLW Victoria with the most goals in the competition and lifted the club’s first Nike FC Cup, the senior men are into the VPL2 finals, and our boys’ and girls’ Victoria Youth Premier League programs continue to grow in numbers and in standard.
“Overall, the club’s been really booming this year in terms of all our teams: senior men, senior women, our boys and girls, plus our community, which is a huge part of our club as well,” said Coveny.
“We’ve had a really exciting year, some really good performances on the field and some good results to go with it.
“We want it to be better, but we believe our program and the environment and the culture that we bring to all our teams is one of the best in the state. And it shows on the field with their performances.”
Asked what has kept him at the club for so long, Coveny pointed to the people around him.
“That’s the reason I’ve been here for so many years. There’s really good people at the club, and especially in the football department.
“The teamwork in terms of the whole football department, we all get together and form a really good team to make this program even better.”
He also singled out the growth of the girls’ program.
“We’re building that program and we’re lucky enough to have Grace Maher on board as well. She’s terrific and she’s building that program. Hopefully next year we’ll even make it better and be a lot more competitive as well.”
Coveny’s recommitment gives the Royals continuity at the top of the football department heading into 2027, and a clear plan for the players and coaches coming through behind him.
