Luv A Duck Women’s Match Preview: Royals Set for Fierce Season Opener Against Brunswick Juventus

The Essendon Royals return to Victoria’s top flight for their second season in the NPLW, kicking off their 2025 campaign with a local rivalry clash against Brunswick Juventus at CB Smith Reserve.

PLEASE NOTE: THE KICK-OFF TIME FOR THIS GAME HAS BEEN MOVED TO 6.30PM.

After a historic debut season in 2024, where the Royals finished third and reached the semi-finals before falling to Preston Lions, the squad is eager to build on that momentum. With a mix of familiar faces and exciting new signings, the Royals are primed for another competitive season.

Essendon has been active in the off-season, strengthening the squad with key additions. Defensively, the Royals welcome experienced New Zealand defender Rebekah van Dort, alongside promising young talents Grace Paradis and goalkeeper Zara Board.

Further bolstering the squad are emerging stars Cobi Wilbert, Jesse Armstrong, Minami Yamasaki, and Renee Pocock. Ava Walters and Maya Stankovic add depth, while Betti Michael (Bulleen Lions) and Emma Langley (Calder United) bring valuable NPLW experience.

Despite some departures—including club stalwart Marie Rampal (Calder United) and goalkeeper Beth Mason-Jones, who signed with A-League Women’s side Sydney FC—the Royals retain a strong core. Last season’s top scorer Audrey Oastler is back to lead the attack, while 2024 captain Mikaela Jurcic will once again wear the armband. Key contributors from last season, including Ava Groba, Mia Lantieri-Bartley, Filomena Delic, Kendrah Smith, and Olivia Ristevski, return to provide stability and continuity.

Brunswick Juventus enter the season under unusual circumstances. They finished in the bottom two of the 2024 campaign and were set for relegation, but an unexpected withdrawal from promoted side Casey Comets saw them granted a reprieve by Football Victoria.

While they’ll be eager to make the most of their second chance, they face a formidable challenge against a Royals side brimming with confidence and ambition.

With a squad that has both talent and experience, the Royals will be looking to set the tone for the season with a strong opening performance. A win against a local rival would be the perfect way to announce their intent in 2025.

Kick-off is set for 7pm at CB Smith Reserve. Don’t miss the action as the Royals take the first step in what promises to be another thrilling NPLW campaign!

Our U20s will kick their season off against the same opposition at CB Smith Reserve. The game will kick off early at 9.30am to beat the forecasted extreme heat on Saturday.
